PaperThin Announces CommonSpot 3.1

Lower total cost of ownership and ease-of-use are hallmarks of latest release by content management vendor

Orlando, FL (October 28, 2002) -- PaperThin, Inc., a leading mid-market content management system vendor based in Boston, today announced the release of CommonSpot™ Content Server 3.1, a full-featured, browser-based Web publishing and dynamic content management solution (CMS), at Macromedia DevCon 2002. This latest release expands the operating system platforms available to customers, and offers support for Macromedia’s J2EE based application server, ColdFusion MX. These enhancements provide more options for organizations to deploy dynamic Web sites quickly and affordably.

According to a recent study by Forrester Research, 54 percent of organizations surveyed put ease-of-use at the top of their wish list in evaluating CMS options. CommonSpot 3.1 was designed with usability in mind, allowing non-technical content producers to create, manage and deliver Web content, without any specialized technical knowledge. With a wizards-based format and more than 50 out-of-the-box features, CommonSpot 3.1 can be implemented more quickly than solutions requiring heavy customization – saving time and development expense, and resulting in a lower total cost of ownership.

PaperThin developed this release to take advantage of enhancements available in Macromedia’s ColdFusion application server. In addition to running on ColdFusion 4.5 and above, CommonSpot 3.1 now runs on ColdFusion MX. ColdFusion MX combines the ease of use and productivity of ColdFusion with the highly scalable, standards-based Java technology architecture. In addition, ColdFusion MX allows developers to create rich Internet applications and work with XML, Web services, and the Microsoft .NET Framework.

"With Macromedia ColdFusion MX, one of our key objectives was to deliver a robust deployment platform that offers software vendors greater development options, such as support for Java and XML," said Jeff Whatcott, senior director, Macromedia. "We're delighted to see that PaperThin, a Macromedia Alliance partner, has been able to leverage ColdFusion MX so effectively, and we are pleased with the future direction CommonSpot is taking with XML and Web services integration."

PaperThin addressed customer needs for additional platform options as well. CommonSpot 3.1 is now available on the Linux operating environment, as well as on Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Sun/Solaris.

In addition to the expanded platform options, PaperThin introduced more than a dozen enhancements in CommonSpot 3.1, including improved image and link management, expanded administrator tools for managing users and data sources, and more email options. These new enhancements augment CommonSpot’s already rich feature set, and provide more tools for efficient site administration.

“With version 3.1 we have extended our supported platforms to include the ever-increasing Linux community, and have added support for several J2EE environments via Macromedia’s ColdFusion MX. Version 3.1 will allow CommonSpot customers to take advantage of the powerful new features of MX,” noted PaperThin, Inc. president Todd Peters. “Web services and XML technologies are increasingly important to our customers. We are committed to delivering future products that will leverage these technologies to help our clients manage their Web efforts and their businesses more effectively.” In addition to presenting CommonSpot 3.1, PaperThin will preview several of these new pre-release features at DevCon.
